Statement Regarding Mask Requirement in Schools for Navasota ISD

Upon review of updated guidelines and requirements that remain in place from the Texas Education Agency (TEA), Navasota ISD has made the decision to continue requiring masks for the remainder of the school year for the safety of our students, staff, and community. Current COVID-19 protocols and safety measures taken by NISD have helped curb the spread of COVID-19 on campuses and have contributed to keeping Navasota schools open and learning in person.

TEA guidelines require contact tracing when a student or staff member has tested positive for COVID-19. The mask requirement has contributed to low numbers of transmission and the number of students and staff needing to be sent home to quarantine, due to close contact. If the mask requirement is removed in classrooms, there is a high probability the number of students and staff needing to quarantine may increase at a rapid rate. Keeping current mask practices in place will allow us to keep students and staff on campus when COVID-19 cases do arise.

Our school board has the local control to remove this mask mandate, according to current TEA guidelines. The NISD School Board and district administrators will continue to monitor the situation and in the future, when the time is right, we may take formal action to modify or eliminate the mask mandate for all campuses.

We’re all in this together and we believe this is the right decision to make with current information and requirements. We appreciate your support in helping us keep our students, staff, and community safe.

It is time to collect nominations for the Navasota I.S.D. District Level Site Base committee. This committee meets annually to review the district's performance report from TEA. The superintendent shall regularly consult the district-level committee in the planning, operation, supervision, and evaluation of the district education program. The district-level committee shall assist the superintendent with the annual development, evaluation, and revision of the district improvement plan. The district-level committee shall analyze information related to dropout prevention. A district may use district-wide staff development developed and approved through the district-level decision process. (BQA-Legal)
