Navasota students, Mid-South Synergy seek support for annual Food for Families Food Drive set for Dec. 9
KBTX will hold its annual Food for Families food drive Dec. 9. Donations will be collected at three locations including Mid-South Synergy in Navasota from 6 a.m. - 7 p.m. Last year, several Navasota student organizations assisted on the day of the food drive, and Mid-South Synergy Organizational/Event Coordinator Tina Warzon is seeking support again this year from Navasota's schools and students.

"We are open to any groups or organizations that would be interested in participating or performing at the event," Warzon said. "We also will work with groups on collections.  The main thing to remember is that all food and money that is collected stays in Grimes County.  We evenly distribute the food among the four Grimes County food pantries.  This is such an awesome way to share during the holiday season."

Warzon said several entities are already collecting food and plan to participate in this year's drive including Navasota Junior High School gym classes and Navasota Intermediate School. The Navasota High School National Honor Society assisted at the food drive last year as did the Navasota FFA. Also, the high school choir performed at the event last year - which is broadcast live on KBTX throughout the day.

To participate and/or get more information about supporting this year's Food for Families food drive, contact Tina Warzon at Mid-South Synergy at 936-825-5102.

Teaching American History From the Oval Office
(Below) High School teachers Jeff Vasek, Bonnie Burger, Kathy Day, Carolyn Button and Lauren Martin pose at the George Bush Presidential Library after taking part in professional development related to the "Teaching American History" grant received by the district this summer. Navasota ISD, in collaboration with Bryan and College Station ISDs, was selected for the grant funded through the Department of Education. The grant, entitled The Mystery and Power of History: More than Words on a Page, was funded for just under $1 million for three years. Also, the 2009-2010 National History Day History Contest for junior high students is Nov. 12 and for high school students, Dec. 7. This year's theme is "Innovation in History: Impact and Change." Last year, three high school students made it through three rounds of competition to represent Texas at the national level in Maryland.
