NISD Board of Trustees Meeting Report for Nov. 10 Regular Meeting, Nov. 12 Special Meeting
The
Navasota ISD Board of Trustees held a special meeting Thursday, Nov 12.
The Board heard a report from Texas Association of School Boards
representative Dr. Bob Smith about his findings from staff and
community forums designed to develop a superintendent profile. Smith
met in separate groups with students, teachers, non-certified
personnel, administrators and community members Oct. 29 to gather
suggestions and opinions about the qualifications, characteristics, and
leadership skills the future superintendent should possess.
Thursday,
Nov. 12, the Board established a timeline for completing the process of
hiring a superintendent. The position of superintendent was posted Nov.
13 in accordance with state and local guidelines. The Board intends to
name a lone finalist at its regular meeting Dec. 14 and intends to name
a superintendent at the following regular meeting Jan. 11.
Items from this month's regular meeting Tuesday, Nov. 10, included a School Board welcome to German exchange student Sandra Graf (to the right with Board President John Price) who is staying with the family of Board Trustee Kevin Clark; recognition
of janitor Otis Dickey who retired after 29 years in the district;
recognition of Navasota Examiner Publisher Dave Kucifer who is retiring
at the end of November; a presentation about college prep courses
and programs by high school principal Amy Jarvis (more news on this
soon); an update on the district's strategic plan process; and regular
monthly reports regarding human resources, curriculum, finances and
maintenance.

Getting Smart-er With Interactive Technologies
High
school math teacher Nikki Robinson took the Board of Trustees back to
the future at this month's regular meeting Tuesday with an algebra
lesson that reflected the integrated approach to
communicating with students and parents that teachers in the department
have begun this year. The
school district has deployed dozens of Smart Technology interactive white boards
in its campuses across the district in recent years, enabling teachers
to use computing
power to deliver enhanced, interactive instructional content. The Smart
technology, which is a system that comprises the interactive
whiteboard, a computer and a projector, provides touch control of all
computer applications. In addition to the classroom instructional use
of Smart Boards, several math teachers have begun putting video lessons
online at Discovery Media-Share or Teacher Tube (free site) and embedding them into class Web sites created using eChalk's
class page utilities. Class Web pages include semester calendars, video
lesson folders, accessible Web resources, and announcements. All of this is designed to
develop more efficient and continuous communication with students and
parents, and to facilitate a learning process that does not stop at the
classroom door. READ MORE
