Graduation 2010
Graduation
for the NHS Class of 2010 is set for Friday, June 4, at 8 p.m. at
Rattler Stadium. Gates will open at 6:30 p.m. Please enter through the
Home entrance. Overflow parking will be at the junior high school and
behind the junior high and high schools. The band booster club will
have water available for purchase inside the main gate. No outside food
or drinks are allowed in the stadium. |
A&M Coach to Speak at FCA Reception Texas A&M assistant football coach Steve Kragthorpe
will be the guest speaker at the FCA reception scheduled for May 25
from 5:30-6:45 p.m. in the Navasota High School library. Everyone is
invited, and there is no price for admission. Special guests include
former college football players Markeith Wesley (NHS c/o 2005, Texas
A&M Kingsville) and Jordan Peterson (Texas A&M University).
Dessert will be served.

As
the 2009-2010 school year nears completion, district campuses are
making plans for summer school. Secondary summer school (grades 6-12)
will be held at Navasota Junior High School. Elementary summer
school (grades K-5) will be held at John C. Webb Elementary School.

yearbooks
are on sale now through June 4. The cost is $50. Yearbooks can be
personalized with names for an additional $5. Orders should be placed

Local Organizations, Area Colleges & Universities Help Pave "The Road to Success" for 2010 Graduates
Texas
A&M University President Dr. R. Bowen Loftin with NHS Valedictorian
Taylor Hagan and Salutatorian Abbi Isbell. Dr. Loftin was the keynote
speaker at this year's scholarship banquet held May 18.  | Navasota High School held its annual scholarship banquet, The Road to Success,
May 18, during which more than $700,000 was awarded to graduating
seniors from the class of 2010. Local businesses, organizations, and
memorial funds provided 60 scholarships to 50 graduating seniors.
Sixteen institutions of higher learning offered scholarships to NHS
students including Texas A&M University which was represented at
the banquet by current university president Dr. R. Bowen Loftin,
Director of Special Programs Lynn Barnes, Associate Director of
Scholarships Myra Gonzalez, and financial aid adviser Roy Lopez. Class
of 2010 valedictorian Taylor Hagan and salutatorian Abbi Isbell
accepted scholarships from Texas A&M along with six other students.

Gomez received three scholarships from A&M totaling $23,000. He
also received scholarships from Grimes County Go Texan and the Navasota

received a $20,000 Regents Scholarship from A&M. Dr. Loftin, who
graduated from Navasota High School in 1967, delivered the keynote
address, reflecting on his experiences as a youth growing up in Grimes
County. Loftin encouraged the Class of 2010 to set goals and work hard
no matter their choice of college or university. Also, Grimes County
Go-Texan awarded 20 students with scholarships, Real Essence of
Aspiring Ladies awarded six students with Navasota
ISD Board of Trustee Hollis Hood and high school senior Jonathan Sayon.
Sayon was awarded the 2010 Tommy Hood Memorial Scholarship.  | scholarships,
and the Monica Wesley Memorial Scholarship provided five scholarships.
Three students each were awarded scholarships by the David E. Gaines
Memorial Scholarship, the George Washington Carver Alumni Association,
and the Navasota Kiwanis Club.

Navasota ISD Board of Trustees Monthly Meeting ReportHigh
school juniors Rodney Brown and John Hill price were recognized for
their achievements in UIL competition this spring. Brown won the Class
3A state championship in the discus at the state track & field
meet. Price took second place in the state in biology at the UIL
academic state meet.  |
The Navasota ISD Board
of Trustees began its monthly meeting May 17 recognizing junior high and
high school students for their achievements in academics and athletics. High
school juniors Rodney Brown and John Hill Price both recently competed at the
state level; Brown winning the Class AAA state championship in the discus at
the UIL State Track & Field Meet while Price earned second place in biology
at the UIL State Academic Meet. Both students earned special centennial medals
in commemoration of the UIL's 100th year of sanctioned competition. The Board
also recognized junior high and high school state history fair qualifiers and
the high school band for its sweepstakes victory this spring.
Special
presentations
were made by Nancy Bouliane, high school librarian and prom chairman,
about
this year's prom and after prom. Also, junior high school ESL teacher
Carli
Goodsell reported to the Board about her students' trip to Texas
A&M
University last month. Junior high ESL students took a campus tour to
find out about what college life is like and learn about opportunities
after high school.

OTHER ITEMS
Trustees Kevin Clark, Hollis Hood, and John
Price took the oath of office for new three year terms. All three ran unopposed
this spring. The Board voted to keep current officers John Price (president),
Marilyn Bettes (vice president), and Phillip Cox (secretary) in their positions
for new one year terms. The Board of Trustees approved the hiring of
Erin Meadows, Huong Pho (NJH science), Daniel Siegert (NJH band), Joan Speer
(NHS math), and Kimberly Svien.

Everyone READS! at John C. Webb Elementary
Navasota City Manager Brad Stafford reads to Deanne Swierc's first grade class.  | Everyone
was reading at John C. Webb Elementary, May 7, in celebration of
Everyone READS! Day. Coordinated by Region VI Education Service Center
for the past 11 years, the event is designed to encourage students to
become successful readers as outlined by the goals of the Texas Reading Initiative.
Parents, grandparents, guardians, friends, community members, and civic
leaders visited the school and read their favorite children's books to
students.

Student Authors Showcase Material for Family, Friends
Student Authors Jennifer Ruiz, Jicel Munoz, and Brenda Cervantes  | Navasota
Intermediate and John C. Webb Elementary student authors got to show
off their work at "Meet the Author" night May 11. Parents, family, and
friends collected autographs and enjoyed refreshments as the student
authors displayed their work. Student publications will remain in the
library in a special section marked "Local Authors."
