Navasota
ISD recently received its preliminary TAKS results from testing this
year. Overall test scores have improved district-wide with 10th grade
scores exceeding the state average in all areas tested. Those students
will be taking the Exit Level TAKS in 2011. The following results do
not include the second administration of the 5th and 8th grade math and
reading test. The district expects those results to have a positive
effect on overall scores.

Growing Number of Grads Leaving With College Credit
Navasota High School's Class of 2010 produced 159 high
school graduates. Many of them are already well on their way to their next
graduation, leaving high school with as many as 27 college credit hours.
Navasota ISD has partnered with Blinn College for several years to offer
students dual credit opportunities but the district has greatly expanded its
program to offer high school students more college credit choices. Through
StateU.com, a distance learning partnership with Lamar University and The University of Texas-Arlington, along with a continued relationship with Blinn College,
Navasota High School currently offers 33 hours of college credit with plans to
continue expanding its catalog.
During
the 2009-2010 school year, 38 juniors and seniors
took dual credit courses with 15 seniors graduating this year with at
least
three hours of college credit. Among those seniors, nine have
accumulated at
least 18 hours of college credit, and 12 have completed at least 24
hours. Luis Gomez graduated this year with 24 credit hours and plans to
take courses in the summer so that by the fall he will begin his career
at Texas A&M University as a sophomore.Luis
Gomez graduated with 24 college credit hours and plans to enter Texas
A&M University in the fall as a college sophomore after taking two
courses this summer. |
"The
dual credit program has allowed me to get a head start, and knowing
that I am going to enter college as a sophomore is a great feeling,"
Gomez said. "I believe it allowed me to become a more rounded and
prepared student for college."
Current dual credit courses offered include college freshman
and sophomore English, U.S. history, government, economics, Texas government,
psychology, and art appreciation. Upon successful completion of a dual credit
course, students immediately earn applicable college and high school credit.
Those credits are guaranteed to transfer to any state university or community
college in Texas. Furthermore, credits may also be accepted by private and
out-of-state colleges and universities at the discretion of the receiving
institution. In an effort to encourage high school students to attend college,
the state of Texas is funding many of the dual credit courses through
StateU.com, and the participating institutions have kept tuition costs low for
those courses not covered by the state. Contact Navasota High School Counselor Bill Irvine for more information on the school's dual credit program.
