Brazos Valley History Teachers Go To Washington, D.C.
Teachers from Navasota, College Station, and Bryan continued participation this summer in The Mystery and Power of History: More Than Words on a Page - a grant funded through the
Department of Education designed
to improve student achievement by enhancing teachers' knowledge of
traditional American history through intensive ongoing professional
development in both content and research-based teaching strategies. The
grant was funded for just under $1 million for three years. Through
sustained intensive professional development consisting of lectures and
guided readings by expert historians, guided field excursions at some
of the nation's most significant historical sites, and collaborative
work in grade-level teams to integrate content and teaching strategies,
the program is designed to provide teachers with a deeper understanding
and appreciation of traditional American History and enhance their
skills in teaching students to higher standards. The thematic goal of
the project is to deepen teachers' and students' understanding of how
the principles of liberty and democratic government have helped to
shape America's social, political and legal institutions.

Rattler Band Takes Summer Trip to New York City
The
Rattler Band visited New York City this summer, hitting the city's
traditional tourist spots in addition to attending a concert by the New
York Philharmonic. The famous symphony orchestra, organized in 1842, is
the oldest American symphonic institution and plays in Avery Fisher
Hall located in New York's Lincoln Center. Band students also got to
visit Wall Street and the site of George Washington's inauguration, the
Statue of Liberty, Times Square, and Central Park. This is the second
big trip band director Martin England has coordinated for Navasota
students. The band visited Chicago two years ago.
