STAAR to replace TAKS
Commissioner of Education Robert Scott announced last week that the next generation of student tests will be called the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness or STAAR.

STAAR will replace the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS), which is the criterion-reference assessment program that has been in place since 2003.

NHS Students Bring History into the 21st Century 
High School history teacher Kathy Day is getting her students
connected to history in a way that none of the historical figures the students are studying could have imagined. Several teachers in the district are using Facebook as a communication tool for students and parents but in Day's AP History classes, Facebook Fan Pages are a way for students to give historical figures a new voice. Day gave students a choice between creating a Google Apps Web site or a Facebook Fan Page. Students with accounts then created Fan Pages in the name of their assigned historical figure or Google Web Sites using their Navasota ISD student Google accounts. READ FULL STORY

Former First Lady Encourages Students Through Reading Discovery Distance Learning Program
John C. Webb Elementary and Navasota Intermediate School students participated in the Reading Discovery Distance Learning Program featuring former First Lady Barbara Bush
in conjunction with the George Bush Presidential Library & Museum. The session, which focused on students in grades 4-8, was about the history of U.S. presidents, and Mrs. Bush read to the students from the book, Mr. President, A Book of U.S. Presidents. She then answered questions from students all across the state of Texas. The Bush Library, along with Region VI ESC, Junior League of Bryan-College Station, and the Rotary Club of College Station, will present the students that were in attendance with a copy of the book from which Mrs. Bush read.
Rattler Athletes, Coaches Enjoy Milestone Month
Girls Clinch Playoffs, Boys Leading District Race

The basketball regular season is coming to and end but both Rattler teams are making plans for the playoffs again.
Also, both coaches have reached career milestones this season with girls' coach Tommy Gates earning his 500th career victory last week and boys' coach Donald Wesley getting his 200th career win this week. The first-place boys' team is 8-1 in district play and 17-4 on the season while the girls are 8-2 in league play Donald Wesleyand 31-3 on the year. Both teams travel to Cameron this week. The girls wrap up the regular season Feb. 9 at home against Madisonville, and the boys finish Feb. 12 at home against Rudder. Three Rattlers Accept Football Scholarships
Wednesday was national signing day for high school athletic recruits. It was the first day a high school athlete could sign a binding national letter of intent. Three Navasota football players accepted offers to play at the collegiate level. Aleon Calhoun committed to Texas Tech University, Kye Hildreth will be playing at Lamar University, and Jarvis Harrison is headed to Navarro Junior College.

Webb Students Treated to Performance by Author, Singer, Songwriter Chester Drawers    Chester Drawers
John C. Webb students were treated to a performance this week by singer, song-writer Eddie Bowman - known around the world as Chester Drawers. He is most famous for his children's books including the "Silly Song Series." All of his books are on the national readers program, Accelerated Reader. He has also written three humorous and inspirational books. Chester signed autographs for students after his performance.

Children's Author Visits Navasota Campuses to Share Writing Experiences With Students, Teachers   Kathy Whitehead
Students at High Point Elementary and Navasota Intermediate got a visit from children's author Kathy Whitehead this week. Whitehead, who lives in College Station, has published two books. She is the regional adviser for the Brazos Valley Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. She visits schools to share her writing experiences with students, teachers, and parents.
