Rattler Hoops Teams Prepare for Playoffs
Both Rattler basketball teams are getting ready for the playoffs. The girls will play Cleveland in Johnson Coliseum on the campus of Sam Houston State University Friday at 6 p.m. The boys will play the following week. The date and opponent are not yet certain. Check the Navasota ISD Web site calendar for times and locations as the playoffs progress.

NISD Board of Trustees Holds February Meeting
The Navasota ISD Board of Trustees held a special meeting and a regular meeting Feb. 15. The trustees recognized janitor Annie B. Turner who retired after 16 years at John C. Webb Elementary. Each campus principal presented strategies for benchmark testing and interventions as TAKS testing nears. Items Superintendent Rory Gesch reported to the trustees included a strategic planning update, TEA's press release concerning the replacement for the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, and an average daily attendance update. The school board approved individual action items that included the 2010-2011NIMS district calendar and the adoption of the National Incident Management System as the district's standard for incident management.

Dr. Dawn Marie Baletka, Director of Grant Services, presented three new grants received by the school district in recent weeks. The Rural Technology Pilot (R-Tech 3) Grant ($200,000) to finance technology-based supplemental instruction for grades 6-12; the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant ($140,000/$280,000) supporting the creation of community learning centers that provide students academic enrichment opportunities Fitnessduring non-school hours; and the Texas Fitness Now Grant ($18,316) to support in-school physical education, nutrition and fitness programs for students in grades 6-8.

Director of Grant Services Among Only 12 in State to Earn Grant Professionals Certification
Dr. Dawn Marie Baletka, Director of Grant Services, became one of only 12 in the state and 282 in the nation to be certified by the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. The GPCI is in affiliation with the American Association of Grant Professionals and was formed to develop and administer the field's first psychometric certification program. To date, Navasota ISD has obtained more than $1.8 million in grant funding in areas that include literacy, history, emergency management, pre-kindergarten, technology, nutrition, fitness, and after-school programs. 

High School Choir to Perform Fundraising Concert
The Navasota High School choir will perform Thursday, Feb. 18, in the Navasota Junior High School Gymnasium. The theme is "New York, New York", and the show is a fundraising event to support a trip to New York City this summer to participate in a theatrical workshop and experience Broadway. The show will consist of famous Broadway tunes and will feature both student and teacher performances. Tickets may be purchased at the door or from a choir student. The price is $5. Children under five will be admitted free. Show time is 7 p.m.

Navasota Students Compete in Regional History Fair
Navasota students competed in the Brazos Valley Regional History Fair last week at the Star of the Republic Museum in Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park. Thirty-three high school and junior high school students advanced to the state fair to be held at the Bob Bullock Museum in Austin, May 7.

Diamonettes, Fang Dancers Earn Honors, Awards    
The NHS Diamonettes and Fang Dancers competed this weekend at A&M Consolidated High School in the American Dance and Drill Team Competition. Fang Dancers received Division 1 Scores for their Team Jazz.  Best in Class was awarded to a Small Ensemble and Medium Ensemble.
